The Sunflower

The sunflower is a large inflorescence - which means the flower head is actually made of many tiny flowers called florets.

Sunflowers are very fast growing plants & in the right conditions they can grow 8-12 feet tall in 6 months.

The sunflower is native to the America's and was used extensively by Native American Indians for food, as oil, in bread, medical ointments, dyes and body paints.

The Sunflower is Kansas's state flower and the national flower of Ukraine.

They follow the movement of the sun across the sky from east to west, and this process is known as heliotropism. And, they grow best with 6-8 hours of sunlight each day.

The sunflower is native to North America and by the 19th century, the country was planting 2 million acres of sunflowers each year. 

They've traveled to space! In 2012, U.S. astronaut Don Pettit brought along a few companions to the International Space Station: sunflower seeds.
